Century High Graduate Awarded Timothy J. Atkinson Memorial Scholarship
The fourth annual Timothy J. Atkinson Memorial Scholarship has been awarded to Christina Antolick of Sykesville, a 2012 graduate of Century High School. The $1,000 scholarship is presented each year to help one Carroll County student as they pursue a career in a field that will assist or advocate for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Ms. Antolick served as a student volunteer at the Carroll County Public School Augmentative Communication Summer Camp where she was a one-on-one peer assistant for a student with autism and a developmental disability, and is also non-verbal. She used assistive technology to communicate with the student to create a personal connection while encouraging success in the classroom environment. She has volunteered additional hours to program augmentative communication devices for children throughout the county. Ms. Antolick has assisted at birthday parties for children with Down Syndrome and plans to work over the summer at the Carroll Springs School extended school year program as a one-on-one assistant with students with disabilities.
She plans to attend Towson University in the fall with a major of family studies and human services.
The scholarship was created in honor of Timothy J. Atkinson, former Executive Director of The Arc Carroll County, who passed away in November of 2008.
